...Silky, fleshy, and loaded with ripe, brambly fruit, the Cascina Francia appears to offer earlier approachability than it usually does--and certainly much earlier than Monfortino; in fact, the estate decided not to make Monfortino in ’09, putting all its fruit into the sublime Barolo Cascina Francia. Succulent fruit is underlain by a mineral core and framed with cigar wrapper, fresh-cut herbs, eucalyptus and spice in this wine that morphs beautifully as it moves across the palate. The estate makes its Cascina Francia with natural yeasts, temperature controlled fermentation and a lengthy maceration of 3-4 weeks; after this, the wine ages in large Slavonian botti and in bottle for a total of four years. This is a must-have Barolo bottling for real aficionados
